This page provides information for students in mechanical engineering who will enter their third year next academic year and are interested in joining our laboratory, as well as students from other universities and colleges of technology.

Who We're Looking For

A good match between your desired research topic and our research is important. In addition, our laboratory may be a good fit for students who

  • Like, or are interested in, computers
  • Like programming, or want to give it a try

Having the following skills will also help you get started relatively smoothly with our research.

  • Command-line operation on UNIX-like systems (Linux, Mac, Windows Subsystem for Linux, etc.)
  • C, C++
  • Python
  • Fortran
  • Shell scripting and other programming languages
  • Machine learning frameworks (Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow), quantum computing frameworks, and related tools

However, it is entirely possible to acquire these skills after joining the laboratory.

Main Activities After B3 Laboratory Assignment (From June Onward)

Third-year students (B3) in the Mechanical Engineering program are assigned to laboratories in June. Their main activities in the laboratory thereafter are:

  • Training II
  • Graduate school entrance examination
  • Graduation research

Students taking the graduate school entrance examination must also take a standardized English test such as the TOEIC. Opportunities to take the TOEIC are generally available only once every few months, so please plan well in advance and, to be fully prepared, consider taking it more than once.

Regular Laboratory Activities

Our laboratory is not very different from other typical laboratories. The following activities are required as part of regular research work:

  • The Graduate Seminar, in which all students from the fourth undergraduate year onward participate in discussions (held weekly, with each student presenting approximately once a month)
  • Local seminars, in which students working on a particular research topic meet for discussion (approximately once every two weeks)

We also encourage you to discuss research topics actively with other members of the laboratory in your day-to-day work. Explaining and teaching ideas to others helps deepen your own understanding.
